Rebuild Woonsocket and The WATCH Coalition Join the Call for an Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza

As of December 6th, with over 16,000 Palestinians killed by indiscriminate bombings by the government of Israel, nearly 7,000 of them children, and no signs of slowing down, there is an urgent call for us to make a collective appeal to our elected politicians to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

For context on the unfolding crisis:

  • Just in the first week of the siege on Gaza, the Israeli Defense Forces wiped out 47 entire families from the civil registry, as they killed every single member of those households.

  • The United Nations World Health Organization has condemned the over 250 attacks on hospitals, healthcare workers, and patients, with newborn babies dying due to the ongoing siege of hospitals.

  • Israeli bombardment has killed more journalists and their family members than in any other similar conflict in the past 30 years.

  • The Center for Constitutional Rights has stated, “Israel is attempting to commit, if not actively committing, genocide in the occupied Palestinian territory, and specifically against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.”

Why should Woonsocket residents care?

When we see an affordable housing crisis exploding, when our government cuts money from subsidizing child care, and when they refuse to fund paid family leave, we must ask how they were able to find 14 billion dollars in the span of weeks to give without any condition to another country to bomb, maim, and kill civilians and children.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza did not just begin in the past few weeks. In fact, the United Nations Special Rapporteur to Palestine has described the occupied Palestinian territory as “a constantly-surveilled open air prison.” Gaza has been under Israeli-imposed blockade for 11 years and just in 2018, 1 million Palestinians in Gaza did not have enough food to feed their families.

We believe that the safety and rights to live and thrive for Palestinians and Israelis alike are intrinsically intertwined and can never be realized for as long as militarism is the only option that is left on the table. We demand that our elected officials stop sending our tax money to fund war crimes, call for an immediate, permanent ceasefire in Gaza, call for the release of Israeli and Palestinian captives to be prioritized, immediately restore life-saving access to humanitarian aid, and support a self-determination process for Israeli and Palestinian citizens that leads to an end to apartheid, an end to occupation, and to liberation for all.
